The Preparations Begin

After a month cruise to to Las Palmas, the crew list finalised, and the preparations for the ARC are now on full swing.

Spinnaker

The Crew

Paul Anley: Owner and Skipper. Paul was brought up sailing and boating. Since then he has sailed extensively in SA, and the Med first on his Oceanis 50, and since 2015 on Gust of Wind. through the Baltic and back down to Las Palmas.

Bruce Tedder: Yachtmaster Ocean. Bruce has had extensive experience in the boating industry, first as skipper with his wife Nadine of charter yachts in the Caribbean and the Med, and since then in the Boating Industry in South Africa, as a charter operator, broker and industry consultant. This will be his 17th Atlantic crossing.

Justin Anley: Yachtmaster Ocean and Dive instructor. Justin has sailed with Paul on many of the family trips, but has also worked in the Superyacht industry.

Samuel Hardy: Yacht Master Ocean and full time deckhand. Sam hails from Mauritius and has been brought up in a yachting family. He sailed with Paul down from La Rochelle to deliver the boat in Las Palmas and has been largely responsible for the preperation of the boat.

Pieter DuToit: Yachtmaster Ocean. Pieter has sailed in SA and has participated in many long distant races. He sailed a leg in The Baltic on Gust of Wind in 2016 from Sweden to Estonia.

Matthew Du Toit: Mathew has sailed with his Dad, Pieter in SA and Mauritius.

Sam Stuttard: Sam has sailed in the UK and Spain  and this trip will extend his sailing experience.

The Preparations So Far

A New Spinnaker: This should get us going downwind:

Satcomms: The handheld has been upgraded to an Iridium Pilot, Red box, and 4 G router . Now where to mount it? Once up, besides receiving e mailed grib files and race updates, we can keep you all dated too!

Power: Gust of Wind is very power hungry. She has 2 fridges and a deep freezer, all very useful for the transatlantic run, but chews power.Another 240 AMP Hour battery set, and an additional 4 solar panels. Add to that a watt and sea generator. (Hopefully that will keep the ice maker working)

Serviced: Engines, generator, watermaker, auto pilot, and liferafts all serviced and ready.
